A document has been sent misusing the name and SRA number of a genuine registered foreign lawyer Syed Mustafa Mahdi and purporting to be from 'Mustafa Mahdi Legal' regarding the recovery of investments funds.

What is the scam?

The SRA has seen a document sent to a member of the public in relation to the supposed recovery of funds.

The document misuses the name and SRA number of a genuine registered foreign lawyer (see below). The document bears the heading 'Mustafa Mahdi Legal' and also quotes the address of 'George Street, Guildhall, York, YO1, United Kingdom', email address 'info@mahdilegal.co.uk' as well as a website of 'mahdilegal.co.uk'.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a firm of solicitors called 'Mustafa Mahdi Legal'.  

Any business or transactions through the above firm, address, email address, or website is not undertaken by a firm or solicitor authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine registered foreign lawyer called Syed Mustafa Mahdi (SRA number 7016898).

The genuine registered foreign lawyer has confirmed they have no connection to the above matter.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
